(BEARD OPEN):
Drug use is continuing its downward slide, according to the latest data from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration--SAMHSA. John Walters, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, explains.
(WALTERS):
"Youth substance use is on a strong, downward trend that continues. Further good news can be found not only in this survey, but in others we have seen previously. Past-month use of any illicit drug by young people, in this survey, dropped 15 percent since 2002. Current use of marijuana declined [a] full 17 percent since 2002 with an 11 percent drop between 2004 and 2005 alone."
(BEARD CLOSE):
Walters said American teens are getting the message that using drugs limits their futures and they are turning away from destructive patterns and misconceptions about drugs.
