(BEARD OPEN):
There has been a growing recognition that the substance abuse treatment field is facing a workforce crisis. Recruitment and retention of staff have surfaced as critical problems for many agencies. Doctor H. Westley Clark, director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, within the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMHSA, says the workforce would benefit greatly, if society fueled interest in addiction treatment the way they currently do for the fields of medicine or psychology.
(CLARK):
"The addiction treatment workforce, by itself, cannot improve its numbers. The most important thing to realize is that addiction treatment is a public good and that our whole system needs to participate in fueling the interest in addiction treatment just as our whole system, the whole society, fuels the interest in going into medicine in general, or psychology, or social work."

Doctor Clark and other experts examine what the addiction treatment field is doing to encourage more people to enter the field and help those already there preserve the flame of their passion in a SAMHSA Webcast entitled, "The Addiction Treatment Workforce: Where We Are, Why We're Here, and Where We Need to Be." The Webcast is part of the "Road to Recovery" series and can be viewed by visiting www.recoverymonth.gov. For the "SAMHSA Newsline", I'm Bill Beard.
