Profile America for the 23rd day of Black History Month. When Cathy Hughes was young, she would stand in front of the mirror in the bathroom, holding her toothbrush and pretending it was a radio microphone. That desire, plus a lot of hard work and dedication, have made her one of the top broadcast executives and on-air personalities in the African-American community. Her Radio One organization owns 71 stations in 22 of the top urban markets around the country, and a few years ago she launched TV One, a national cable and satellite television network aimed at African-American adults. Across the U.S. there are more than 11,000 radio stations and the average home has eight radios. This special Profile America for Black History Month is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
