Profile America for the 25th day of Black History Month. When she was little, Dominique Dawes had a lot of energy around her Silver Spring, Maryland, house, so her parents sent her to gymnastics classes. She proved to be a special talent and began winning awards. Making the 1992 Olympic team, she came home with a bronze team medal. At the 1996 Olympics, she became the first African-American to win an individual medal a bronze for her floor exercise. She also won a team gold medal. She is the only American female gymnast to compete in three Olympics. Some 1,400 young women compete in gymnastics at 86 colleges across the U.S. This special Profile America for Black History Month is a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
